Loch Bharradail is a lake on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in the sparsely populated, hilly region in the east of the island about 1.5 km south of Kilmeny . The shallow, reed lake is a maximum of about 250 m long and wide. Loch Bharradail is fed by three short streams. A stream flows off in the north, which is one of the source rivers of the Sorn . Loch Fada is about a kilometer to the east . Loch Bharradail is a few hundred yards off a single lane road that connects Ballygrant with the Glenegedale area.
There is a small, oval-shaped island near the north shore of the lake. This is probably partly of human origin and served as a crannóg . The island can be reached from the shore via a stone dam, which is now hidden under a 20 cm thick layer of mud. It rests on a foundation made of gravel and small stones that gently rise from the silty lake floor. A little below the surface of the water, the island is secured by medium-sized and large stones. There are various remains of structures on the island; including a twelve-meter-long masonry.
Surroundings
In the northeast there are the remains of two round house settlements, the surroundings of which show traces of agriculture. About one kilometer to the south-east and south-west are the remains of two abandoned settlements from more recent times. The foundation walls of various buildings and a kiln are still there.
In the past, lead was mined in the vicinity of the lake .
