Loch Leathann is a lake on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is not to be confused with the lakes Loch Leathan or Loch Leathan an Sgorra , which are also on Islay. The lake is located in the sparsely populated, hilly region in the east of the island about 1.5 km west of the Beinn Dubh . The nearest town is Ballygrant, about 3.5 km to the north . The lake is a maximum of about 430 m long and 260 m wide. Loch Leathann is fed by a short stream to the north. In the east, a stream flows out of the lake, the course of which soon turns in a westerly direction and which ultimately over the Laggan into Laggan Baydrains. About 300 m north is Loch Fada . Loch Leathann is a few hundred yards off a single lane road that connects Ballygrant with the Glenegedale area.
Surroundings
About a kilometer northeast of the lake on the slopes of Beinn Dubh are the remains of a dun . This encompassed an area of 27 mx 22 m and was enclosed by a 2.5 m, in the southwest even 6.1 m thick, today a maximum of 30 cm high wall. Within the walls, only the remains of a rectangular building from more recent times can be seen today.
In the past, lead was mined in the vicinity of the lake .
