Glenegedale ( Gaelic : Gleann Eigeadail ) is a small scattered settlement on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located about six kilometers north of the Port Ellen ferry terminal and nine kilometers southeast of the island's capital Bowmore near the Glenegedale River. The closest settlements are western Glenmachrie , about three kilometers south of Leorin and four kilometers north of Duich . The village is divided into the western Glenegedale and the eastern Glenegedale Lots . Today Glenegedale consists of only a few inhabited houses. In 1841, 97 people were counted in Glenegedale and another 25 in Glenegedale Lots. In 1851 only 74 people lived in Glenegedale, whereas the population of Glenegedale Lots had risen to 174.

Facilities

West of Glenegedale is Islay Airport , also known as Glenegedale Airport , the only airport on the island. This was expanded into a military airfield during the Second World War . From this time there are still a command bunker and a target practice range in Glenegedale. Between the town and the airfield, the A846 runs between Port Ellen and Bowmore.

Archaeological finds

North of Glenegedale on a hilltop there are heavily damaged wall remnants, which probably belonged to a dun and suggest an earlier settlement of the area. The enclosed area measures 12 m × 9 m.
