Glenmachrie , also Glen Machrie or Glenmachry , is a small town on the Scottish island of Islay and is therefore in the Council Area Argyll and Bute or the traditional Scottish county Argyllshire . It is located in the south of the island about three kilometers northwest of the Port Ellen ferry terminal and five kilometers southeast of Bowmore , the main town on the island. The closest settlement is Glenegedale, a few hundred meters northeast . The name of the village is derived from its location in the small valley of Glen Machrie , through which the Glenmachrie River flows, which joins the Glenegedale River to the Machrie River a few hundred meters west . Directly northwest of Glenmachrie is Islay Airport, the only airport on the island. The village is connected to the island's road network by the A846 .
In Glenmachrie today there is only one inhabited building, the Glenmachrie House . In the 1841 census, Glenmachrie counted 27 people. Ten years later the number had decreased to 22 residents. In 1882 there were still two covered, one partially covered and three uncovered buildings in Glenmachrie. There was also a round building that could have been a kiln. Today there are four roofed buildings. The foundation walls of a historic round hut were discovered about one kilometer southwest of the village.
