Loch Calder is a freshwater lake in the traditional county of Caithness , in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is located around eight kilometers southwest of the coastal town of Thurso .

The lake is four kilometers long and no more than 1.6 kilometers wide and is 66 meters above sea level. Its circumference is 13 kilometers. The volume of 24,413,453 m³ is fed via a tributary on the south bank that drains from the nearby Loch Olginey . Loch Calder has an average depth of 6.4 meters with a maximum depth of 25.9 meters. Its catchment area is 22.82 km². A small stream called Alltan Ghuinne flows off the north bank , which after a short run flows into Forss Water , which flows into Crosskirk Bay , an Atlantic bay on the Scottish north coast , near the hamlet of Crosskirk . The lake water is alkaline.
Calder Loch has populations of trout and arctic char .
