Loch Gruinart is a bay on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in the northwest of the island and penetrates the island about 6.5 km from the north. Together with the Loch Indaal bay , which comes from the south and runs northeast, it forms an isthmus , which, with a width of four kilometers, almost separates the Rhinns of Islay peninsula from the main island. In the southern area there are sandy and gravelly stretches of shore. The water level of the bay is subject to the tides and when the water is low, large parts of the flat, sandy bottom are dry.

Administratively, Loch Gruinart is part of Islay of the Council Area Argyll and Bute . Historically, it was part of what is now the traditional county of Argyllshire . The area around Loch Gruinart is sparsely populated and there are no significant settlements to be found on its banks. Bowmore , the main town on the island, is about four miles south-southeast of the head of the bay.

Numerous species of birds nest or overwinter at Loch Gruinart, which is why the area is a protected area. The major bird species at Loch Gruinart include barnacle geese , alpine crows , corncocks , lapwing and white- fronted geese .

At Loch Gruinart the last major battle between two clans on Islay took place in 1598 . At the Battle of Gruinart , Sir Lachlan Mor MacLean and his nephew Sir James MacDonald faced each other. The point of contention was the possession of the Rhinns of Islay, which MacLean wanted to receive as a dowry. The MacLeans succumbed and were almost invariably killed.
