Loch Muick ( Gaelic Allt an Dearg ) is a lake in the Scottish Highlands . It is located in the southern Cairngorms in the Council Area Aberdeenshire , about 14 kilometers southwest of the village of Ballater in Glen Muick , a side valley of the Strathdee , also known as the Royal Deeside valley of the Dee . The lake and its surroundings are part of the Cairngorms National Park and are in the area of the Balmoral Estate , the private property of the British Queen Elizabeth II , which belongs to Balmoral Castle .

Overall, the lake has a length of around 3.6 kilometers from southwest to northeast. The maximum width is about 500 meters, at its deepest point it is almost 80 meters deep. The most important tributary is the Allt an dubh Loch , which rises from the Dubh Loch about three kilometers to the west . The lake drains into the River Muick , which flows into the Dee at Ballater. This flows into the North Sea in Aberdeen .

Glas-allt Shiel

The banks of Loch Muick are characterized by steep mountain slopes of the surrounding mountains, some of which drop almost directly into the lake. Smaller alluvial cones have only formed in the area of the various tributaries . On one of these alluvial cones on the north-western bank, which was formed by the Glas Allt , a stream that rises on the slopes of the Lochnagar , lies the small hunting lodge Glas-Allt Shiel . It was built in the 19th century for Queen Victoria and was used by her as a retreat, especially after the death of her husband, Prince Consort Albert . The small castle is now used by the royal family for hunting trips, and an outbuilding is available to the general public as a bothy (a simple self-catering shelter , similar to a bivouac, common in the Highlands ). With the exception of the buildings by Glas-allt Shiel, the banks of Loch Muick are otherwise undeveloped, and in Glen Muick there are only a few scattered settlements as far as Ballater.

Loch Muick and its surroundings are a popular destination for hikers and climbers. In addition to the lake shores, the tour to Lochnagar as the highest mountain in the Cairngorms south of the Dee is a particularly popular tour.
