Loch Ossian is a lake in the Scottish Highlands . It is located on the eastern edge of Rannoch Moor , about a kilometer east of Corrour train station . The lake is about 10 miles from the nearest public road and can only be reached via Corrour Station on the West Highland Line or on foot. Loch Ossian extends about five kilometers in length in an east-west direction, the maximum width is about 600 meters. The largest tributary is the Allt na Caplaich Beag . The lake drains into the River Ossian , which flows into the River Spean via Loch Guilbinn, about four kilometers to the north . This flows south of Loch Lochy into the River Lochy and finally into Loch Linnhe , a sea hole near Fort William .

Loch Ossian Youth Hostel
Corrour Lodge

The lake and the entire area belong to the Corrour Estate , which is used as a hunting area for hunting red deer and grouse . On the south bank of Loch Ossian there is a youth hostel run by the Scottish Youth Hostel Association. The only other settlement on the lake shore is Corrour Lodge at the eastern end of the lake. Corrour Lodge was originally built at the end of the 19th century as a Victorian hunting lodge for Sir  John Stirling-Maxwell , as a replacement for an older hunting lodge a few kilometers south of the lake on the southwest slope of the Càrn Dearg . He also had a driveway built around the lake and to Corrour station, which opened in 1894. A small steam yacht was brought out onto the lake to transport his hunting guests. In 1942 the hunting lodge burned down and was replaced by a wooden bungalow. From 1999 to 2003 a new lodge was built based on a design by Mosche Safdie .

Loch Ossian and the surrounding mountains are a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers. There are several Munros to the north and south of the loch , including the 937 m high Beinn na Lap on the north side, one of the easiest to climb due to the short approach from Corrour station. To the east of Loch Ossian there are other mountains, the highest being Ben Alder at 1148 meters.
