The Rannoch Moor ( Scottish Gaelic : Mòinteach Raineach ) is an approximately 130 km² moor in the Scottish Highlands . It is located in the Council Areas of Highland , Perth and Kinross and a small part in the north of Argyll and Bute .

description

The Rannoch Moor is located on a plateau 300 to 400 meters above sea level and is largely uninhabited. It has - roughly speaking - a triangular shape. The eastern corner of the triangle is marked by the western bank of Loch Rannoch . Loch Tulla is generally considered the southern tip of the Rannoch Moors . The western corner is at the eastern exit of the Glen Coe valley .

The moorland is completely unsuitable for agriculture and is therefore one of the last landscapes in Scotland hardly touched by human hands. The area is characterized by countless peat swamps , watercourses, ponds and lakes. The largest bodies of water are Loch Laidon , Loch Eigheach and Loch Bà . The Rannoch Moor is also a watershed . The lakes and rivers located to the west ultimately drain into the Atlantic Ocean , the east via the River Tay into the North Sea . The moor is surrounded by numerous mountains up to 1000 m high. The highest mountain around Rannoch Moor is Meall a 'Bhùiridh, located west of the Black Mount , at 1108 m, followed by the neighboring, 1100 m high Creise . To the south are the 1081 m high Beinn a 'Chreachain and the 1038 m high Beinn Achaladair, further over 1000 m high mountains, followed by further, somewhat lower Munros .

Transport and infrastructure

The A82 road crosses south-west of Rannoch Moor on its way north from Glasgow. It leads from Loch Tulla east bank between Lochan na h-Achlaise and Loch Bà past the Kings House Hotel and leaves the moor at the houses of Altnafeadh , which are on the pass to Glen Coe.

The West Highland Line railway also runs past Loch Tulla's east bank and makes its way north in a wide arc to the east through Rannoch Moor. It opens up the moor area through two stops, Rannoch station at the northeastern end of Loch Laidon and Corrour station southwest of Loch Ossian .

There is no road or rail link in the east-west direction. The West Highland Way , a 153 km long long-distance hiking trail, also crosses the area from south to north.

Trivia

  • There are some Donald Duck comics that feature the fictional McDuck Castle . The castle is said to be in a place called Dismal Downs on Rannoch Moor , according to the comics .
  • In the British film Trainspotting (1996), the drug-addicted protagonists of the plot drive to the country for a short hike. The scene was filmed at the Corrour Rail Station on Rannoch Moor.
  • The art action Celtic (Kinloch Rannoch) by Joseph Beuys , which the latter staged in Edinburgh in 1970, refers to the moor landscape. During the action, the film Rannoch Moor was projected, which Beuys had shot together with the Scottish artist Richard Demarco a few months earlier in Ranoch Moor.
