Imad Karim (2017)

Imad Karim (born June 7, 1958 in Beirut ; Arabic عماد كريم) is a Lebanese- German director , screenwriter and television journalist . He has been based in southwest Germany since the end of 1977.

Life

Imad Karim attended school in Beirut and graduated from high school in 1975–1976. In the shadow of the Lebanese civil war that broke out in April 1975 , he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Beirut (ALBA). The war-related interruption of his studies, the persecution by local commanders and the general security situation forced him to leave his home country. He chose Germany as an exile. From 1977 he studied media and social science in Berlin, Mainz and Mannheim and graduated in 1987 with a master's degree . From 1987 to 1991 he financed his living by translating into and from Arabic.

In October 1991, three months after the end of the Lebanese civil war , he returned to his homeland as one of the first directors and shot the film "The lying myths of my war" for the Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education . From 1992 he worked for ARD , ZDF and WDR as a freelance television journalist, film author and director. In the following years he traveled to the crisis areas in the Middle East and reported u. a. for ARD, ZDF and some private broadcasters live on site, but mainly from Lebanon and the Lebanese-Israeli border. Karim realized the majority of his television documentaries and film projects for Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne.

From 1993 he produced a series of documentaries, reports and film essays at home and abroad as a TV writer, director and producer on behalf of WDR television (Lebanon, Syria , Egypt , Morocco , Tunisia , Iraq , Turkey , Ghana , Switzerland , Italy , Spain , Portugal , the Philippines and Hong Kong ). His films were broadcast on the television stations WDR, hr, BR, MDR, ORB, SR, SWR, NDR, 3Sat, Phoenix and in the first ARD program.

Imad Karim was a member of various film juries and has received several television awards himself.

Since the beginning of the refugee crisis , Karim has been involved in media criticism of political Islam . Karim also appeared as an external guest speaker at events organized by Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). In March 2018, the AfD-affiliated Desiderius Erasmus Foundation announced that it had appointed Karim to the foundation's board of trustees.

Work as a filmmaker

The film documentaries by Imad Karim deal with people and individual fates. While his first productions are shaped by surrealist influences, other film projects are characterized by authentic but cautious observation. In some of them, Karim tried to follow real people with background stories for as long as possible with the camera. For his 45-minute documentary Beate von Pückler - The Goat Queen of Andalusia , he accompanied the protagonist for three years.

Controversy

On April 14, 2017, Imad Karim's profile was removed from Facebook . Karim's Facebook page was only restored after a nationwide wave of protests and his Facebook lock in the German Bundestag . On July 31, 2017, the ARD then broadcast the 45-minute report “In the Net of Lies - The Fight Against Fake News” by Claus Hanischdörfer, in which, among other things, a Facebook post by Imad Karim as an example of the distribution of “ Fake News “Is listed. Imad Karim responded to the allegations via YouTube and, for his part, accuses Claus Hanischdörfer of questionable journalistic methods.
