Loch Sholum is a lake on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in the southeast of the island on the slopes of the Beinn Sholum , about three kilometers north-northwest of Ardbeg . The lake is about 600 m long, a maximum of about 250 m wide and extends in an east-west direction.
Loch Sholum is fed by Lochan Sholum , a few hundred meters to the east . A brook flows south from the south-west bank and after a few kilometers near the Lagavulin whiskey distillery it flows into Lagavulin Bay . The lake forms the water reservoir of the distillery, which uses the stream water for whiskey production. With hole Uigeadail is one of the water reservoirs of the neighboring whiskey distillery is Ardbeg only a few kilometers to the northeast. The remains of a Shieling hut may have been discovered on the eastern shore of the lake .
