Loch Watten is a freshwater lake in the traditional county of Caithness , in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is located around twelve kilometers west of the coastal town of Wick and 14 kilometers southeast of Thurso . The village of Watten is on the south bank .

The lake is 4.5 kilometers long and no more than 1.1 kilometers wide and is 17 meters above sea level. Its circumference is eleven kilometers. With a volume of 9,691,938 m³, the shallow lake has an average depth of 2.6 meters and a maximum depth of 3.7 meters. Its catchment area is 55.78 km². The lake water is alkaline. A short stream flows off the east bank and flows into the Wick , which flows into Wick Bay , a North Sea bay on the north-east coast of Scotland.
A trout population lived in Loch Watten . The Far North Line runs along the north bank on its way from Inverness to Wick.
