locr (a slurring of the English locator , "position sensor ") is a photo sharing platform based on geotagging . The online service offers an innovative way of organizing photos based on location information. Based on this information, descriptions are automatically generated for each photo and the position of the photo is displayed on a map. These services are based on photos with geotags. A geotag provides information about the position where the photo was taken and is either generated by GPS or defined manually.

history

Locr was founded in September 2006 in Braunschweig ( Germany ). The company presented the development to the general public for the first time at CeBIT 2007 in Hanover .

Since 2014, locr has shifted the focus of its business activities more towards fee-based geodata services. The photo platform still exists, but is much less present on the home page of the locr website than before, and since March 2016 it has no longer been possible to switch accounts with additional functions (pro-upgrade).

Functions

With the help of a special method, Locr provides photos with automatically generated location descriptions and thus enables clear archiving and management of the images. The positions are visualized on digital maps, aerial and satellite images. As part of the Locr Internet Community, users can upload photos, archive them in photo albums and exchange them interactively with friends, acquaintances or all Internet users.

The users can view the photos on a world map and access photos of any region by changing the map section. You can also search other users' photos and albums using additional criteria.

Wikipedia articles are provided to match the images and / or the environment; In addition, photos taken nearby are displayed so that you can explore the area.

Data protection and access restrictions

Images stored at Locr do not necessarily have to be made public. There is a division into private and public images for the user . Only the latter are shown to all users on a map and in a gallery at Locr. In addition, different groups of people can be granted different access rights.

It is also possible to have the images displayed in Google Earth .

Tags and categories

Classical categorization is becoming less important than tagging , the assignment of keywords. At Locr, for example, there are the categories of public photos , private photos and a few levels for the individual user , but the images that are accessible to everyone are initially only sorted according to the coordinates. The division of the images into locr photos (photos that can be clearly assigned to their location, mainly landscape photos and sights) and all photos enables the photos to be sorted according to their content. Using geo-referenced data, the system automatically assigns tags such as B. Hanover , if the recording was made there.

Upload the photos

There are several ways to geotag the photos and upload them to the platform:

Manual geotagging is useful if the photos do not have integrated GPS data. Users can upload the photo using a form and manually specify the location on a map where this photo was taken.

A far more convenient version of "geotagging" is the use of GPS data from external GPS receivers or GPS receivers in cell phones and PDAs.

Photos taken with the digital camera can be synchronized with the GPS receivers via the time stamp using the locr GPS Photo software , so that they can later be clearly assigned to a position. These photos, with the addition of GPS data, can then be uploaded to locr.com using the same software. The position and other information are then automatically displayed there.

The most elegant version is to use the locr GPS Photo for Symbian program , which enables direct uploading from the mobile phone to locr.com.

There is also a so-called “app” ( locr upload ) for the iPhone which can be used to “geotag” and upload images.
