The Lohmühle is a listed secular building in Westönnen , a district of Werl in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

history

The Lohmühle is the former watermill of Castle Lohe , which is about a kilometer away. It lies at the lowest point in the Westönnen district. The Westönner Bach and the Mühlenbach flow together in the immediate vicinity. The exact time of construction of the building is not known, it was first mentioned in documents in 1561 and 1685 in purchase and seizure files. In various files and in the Westönner church registers, Lohemüller is mentioned again and again from 1610 to 1813. The estate had been owned by the von Papen family since 1738 . The complex originally consisted of two and at times also three different buildings on the right and left side of the Mühlenbach. In the buildings an oil and a corn mill were accommodated, even from a Walke mill is reported in the old files. Until 1865 the mills were driven by water wheels and then by turbines. In the 1970s the mills became unprofitable and the facility was sold. After that, the building was used as a warehouse for a short time and then sold to a private individual.

modification

The mill building was to be converted into a residential building, it was in poor condition. It was leaking, sagging, standing under water and falling apart. In large areas, the floors were missing or rotten. In consultation with the responsible monument authorities , the building permit was granted in 1998.

The hollow block structures with Eternit pent roofs were demolished and new roof trusses and roofs were built. A domestic sewage treatment plant was installed. All ceilings were newly drawn in in concrete or as layers of beams, after which the outer walls of the extensions were renewed. Around 20 historic cast windows were refurbished and re-glazed. The facade stones were exposed and grouted. The building was ready for occupancy in 2000.

bridges

The mill property is crossed by a public path that leads over two historic sandstone bridges. Presumably they were built around 1795 and connected to the accumulation basin in front of the mill. The bridges were extensively renovated.
