The Lois River is a 39 km long tributary of the Georgia Strait in the Canadian province of British Columbia , about 100 km northwest of the city of Vancouver .

The Lois River has its headwaters in the Pacific Ranges , a mountain range of the Coast Mountains , northwest of Diamdem Mountain at an altitude of 1400  m . It initially flows 14 km south through the mountains before flowing into the northern end of Khartoum Lake . It leaves the 6.5 km long lake at its western end and flows after one kilometer into the eastern end of the 14 km long and 152  m high Lois Lake . At its southwest end is the Scanlon Dam , which dams the lake. Below the dam, the Lois River flows 3.7 km before flowing into the sea 15 km east of the city of Powell River . The catchment area of the Lois River covers around 460 km². The mean discharge at the exit of Lois Lake was 24.5 m³ / s before the hydropower plant was commissioned.

Use of hydropower

The Lois River is dammed at the southern end of Lois Lake by the Scanlon Dam . From this a 2.9 km long pressure line leads to the hydropower station, which is located at the Stillwater settlement about one kilometer east of the river mouth on the coast of the Strait of Georgia. This has been in operation since 1930. It has two units with a total installed capacity of 37.4 MW. The second unit was commissioned in 1948. The power plant was sold to Brookfield Renewable by the Catalyst Paper group in the early 2000s, together with the hydropower plant on the Powell River .
