Loituma is a Finnish quartet that combines the Finnish singing tradition with the sound of the kantele . The group achieved international fame through their interpretation of the song "Ievan polkka".

history

Loituma was founded in autumn 1989 as the septet Jäykkä Leipä ('stiff bread') at the Sibelius Academy , Department of Folk Music. The original line-up also included singers Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Tellu Paulasto; however, both later went to Sweden and joined Hedningarna . Anita Lehtola was also a member of Hedningarna until 2000. Loituma was voted “Group of the Year” at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival in 1997 . Over the years the band has continuously pursued its own musical path and expanded its music to include various musical influences of different origins. One of the cornerstones of Finnish folk music is singing . The songs of Loituma, supported in the background by Martti Pokela and Toivo Alaspää, convey Finnish tradition. Another key element of Loituma's music is the kantele.

Ievan Polkka

The song Ievan Polkka (Evas Polka) was originally written by Eino Kettunen in the 1930s . Loituma became known with their version of the Ievan Polkka, sung in the Eastern Finnish dialect , which they supplemented with an intermezzo , which generally consists of sounds without meaning and uses the voice only as an additional musical instrument ( scat ). The intermezzo is freely improvised for each performance. With this interpretation Loituma were also represented in the Finnish charts and later, in April 2007, even in the German Top 50 charts.

For cult became Ievan Polkka especially on Internet forums and blogs through a Flash Video . In this film, Orihime Inoue , a character from the anime adaptation of Bleach , turned a stick of spring onions in a short and repetitive sequence. At the same time, the interlude of the Ievan Polkka sounded in an endless loop .

In 2006, two Italian music producers released a version of the song for which they created the animated cartoon character Holly Dolly .
