The Dobronín – Polná railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated as a nationally guaranteed local line Polna-Stecken – Polna Stadt (Czech: Místní dráha Polná-Štoky – Polná město ). It branches off in Dobronín from the Vienna – Děčín-Prostřední Žleb railway line and leads to Polná in southern Bohemia . Since the end of travel in 1982, it has only been used for freight transport.

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

Polná already had a train station on the Austrian Northwest Railway in 1871. The location of this station five kilometers to the west was hardly conducive to the city's economic development. A large brickworks that wanted to send its products inexpensively by rail was particularly interested in a direct rail connection.

The concession “for the construction and operation of a standard-gauge local railway from the Polna-Stecken station of the kk priv. Österr. Northwest Railway to the City of Polna ”was received on June 13, 1903 by the mayor of Polna, Mr. Rudolf Sadil. Part of the concession was the obligation to start construction of the line immediately and to finish it within two years. The duration of the concession was set at 90 years.

The line was opened on November 18, 1904. The operation was carried out by the kk priv. Österreichische Nordwestbahn (ÖNWB) for the account of the owners. After its nationalization in 1908 the kk Staatsbahnen kkStB took over the management. In 1912, the local railroad's timetable indicated five mixed pairs of 2nd and 3rd class trains running daily. The trains took 20 minutes for the six-kilometer route.

After the First World War, the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) took over the management of the kkStB. On January 1, 1925, the Polna-Stecken – Polna Stadt local railway was nationalized by law and the line was integrated into the ČSD network. The ČSD streamlined operations by using one-man-operated baggage locomotives and closing the little used stop Polná cihelna (Polna brickworks). Initially, this did not result in a reduction in the long journey times.

It was only after the Second World War that the ČSD started using modern motor trains like on other local railways, which on the one hand enabled travel times to be shortened and on the other hand enabled a significant consolidation of the timetable. In the 1970s, up to 19 pairs of passenger trains ran daily. On May 22, 1982 the passenger train service was stopped in favor of a bus connection.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

Today, the route is only used as scheduled by freight trains as far as the Dobronín zastávka stop. This is where the drag line operated by Agropodnik Jihlava as, which has settled on the site of the former brickworks, is operated. The remainder of the route to the end of Polná has been closed since 2005 due to damage to the permanent way. A repair of the line, which would cost about ten million , is not planned by the line operator SŽDC due to the low traffic requirements.

Vehicle use

M 112.001 with passenger train in Polná (1938)

For the account of the Polna-Stecken – Polna Stadt local railway , the ÖNWB used two locomotives that originally came from the Kuttenberg local railway . The two locomotives had the company numbers 1087K and 1088K . The kkStB took over the locomotives and gave them the numbers 96.05 and 06.

The ČSD later (until 1948) used Elbel baggage locomotives of the M 112.0 series . After that, travel was handled with diesel multiple units of the ČSD series M 131.1 .
