María Dolores Lola Sánchez Caldentey , more often called Lola Sánchez (born March 17, 1978 in Valencia ) is a Spanish political scientist who was elected member of the European Parliament on May 25, 2014 as a candidate for the Podemos list .

Life

Lola Sánchez was born in Valencia in 1978 and grew up in Cartagena , Murcia . Her father is an architect and her mother is a housewife. She studied political science at the University of Granada . After completing her degree in political science in 2003, she worked for three years as a representative at various vocational schools in the region. Since the beginning of the economic crisis in Spain she was unemployed, occasionally working as a waitress, dishwasher or private Spanish teacher. She also tried to run a small arts and crafts business as a survival strategy, but it didn't survive the increase in sales tax. She was temporarily in "economic" exile in Iceland, Scotland and the United States. Abroad she tried to work as a Spanish teacher, but that too proved difficult because of the large number of Spaniards trying to do exactly the same abroad.

Context of her election as MEP in 2014

At the time of the election she had no political background; she was even further from having a political career. According to her own statements in performances and interviews, she had only had a very brief experience as a member of the PSOE when she was a student of political science. However, the lack of internal democracy soon moved her to leave. The 15M movement motivated her again and she took part in the protests on the street with enthusiasm. However, the freshness of Podemos' political proposals led them to run in the open primaries .

One month after the 2014 European elections, she was still working as a waitress in Cartagena.
