The Lommatzsch Libelle is a high-performance glider from VEB Apparatebau Lommatzsch of the GDR .

history

In 1954 the production of gliders began in a former glassworks in Lommatzsch near Meißen, initially the Baby IIb and the FES-530 Lehrmeister , which was developed at VEB Waggonbau Gotha . Construction work on a first in-house design began in 1955 in the development team of Heinz Roessing , a member of the Baade Group who had returned from the Soviet Union . The V-1 prototype of the single-seater known as the Lom-55 "Libelle" emerged from the Lo-55 project from the same year and flew for the first time on January 13, 1957 with Karl Treuter. The most obvious difference to the later dragonflies was the V-tail. The testing revealed some significant defects in the design, for example the center of gravity had been calculated incorrectly, the stability around the longitudinal and vertical axis left a lot to be desired and the rudder effect of the tail unit was low due to unclean air flow. A second prototype was created, which served as an exhibition piece and was destroyed in static tests in 1957.

The design was then fundamentally revised by the development team Hans Hartung, Hans Wegerich and Wilhelm Zimmermann. This resulted in the Lom-57 with a normal tail unit. The flight tests took place from June 1957 by Kurt Götze . It was successfully completed and a small series of 13 aircraft was built, another version with a fuselage shortened by 20 centimeters was produced in eleven copies under the designation Lom-57 / I. A special version as a two-seater with seats lying next to each other ( Lom-57 / II , also Libelle II ) was created in response to a request from GST in November 1955.

The standard version Lom-58 "Libelle-Standard" appeared in 1958 as the most built version . 67 of them and the Lom-58 / I , again shortened by 20 centimeters, were made. The next link in the series was the single-seater Lom-58 / II "Libelle-Laminar" (22 pieces). It had a laminar profile NACA 65-615.5 and flaps. The wings were provided with duralumin foil to increase the surface quality. The prototype (registration number DM-2599 ) was approved on February 3, 1962. This model was able to break several national records, including a 100-kilometer triangle flown by Gerhard Wissmann on July 2, 1961 at 103.4 km / h .

The last project Lom-60 "Dragonfly Acrobat" was supposed to be a fully aerobatic glider. Work began in December 1958, two prototypes were launched, but could not be completed due to financial bottlenecks. The favorite (Lom-61 to 64) followed in 1962 as the successor to the dragonfly .
