Look-down / shoot-down

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a look-down / shoot-down Capability (or low vision capability ) refers to the ability of a pulse Doppler radar , a type of active radar in military aircraft , contacts to be able to detect below the own altitude. The signal processing uses the Doppler effect , whereby the radar is able to distinguish the radar echoes of moving objects (preferably other aircraft) from radar echoes generated by ground reflection.

The pulse Doppler radar can often be configured accordingly by the pilot , since there is naturally a relationship between the update frequency and the size of the radar cone. A larger cone takes longer to be fully scanned and vice versa.
