Lorenz Hiel

Lorenz Hiel also: Laurentius ab Hele, Hielius (* around 1532 in Wesel ; † September 16, 1566 in Jena ) was a German physician and botanist.

Life

Nothing is known about Hiel's origin. Apparently he had taken lessons in France or Belgium before enrolling at the University of Rostock in May 1553 . Here he became a Baccalaurus in medicine in 1555 and obtained a licentiate in the same field. In 1559 he moved to the University of Jena , where he became professor of medicine and botany. For this purpose he obtained his doctorate in medicine in Jena in 1560. In 1561 he married Gertrud Schröter (* Weimar; † 1566 in Jena), the daughter of the Weimar mayor and cloth merchant Petrus Schröter and his wife Gertrud Dietz, a sister of Jena professor Johannes von Schröter . There is a son from the marriage. Hiel also took part in the organizational tasks of the Jena University and was rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semester of 1562 . He became a victim of his profession and died of the plague with his family. An epitaph was erected for him and his wife in the Jena city church of St. Michael .
