La Fortaleza is a mountain on the Canary Island of Tenerife . Together with the neighboring El Cabezon, it forms the northernmost part of the mountain range that frames the Las Cañadas basin in the east. At the same time, it is part of the Ladera de Tigaiga , which stretches between two wide valleys created by massive landslides , the Orotava Valley in the east and the Icod Valley in the west, to the north coast of Tenerife. The Fortaleza reaches a height of 2159 m and drops steeply by up to 125 m in the south to the Cañada de Los Guancheros.
Its isolated location makes the Fortaleza an excellent panoramic mountain within the Teide National Park . In addition to the Teide with the Montaña Blanca , the Observatorio del Teide on the Izaña and other peaks on the edge of the Cañadas plateau, the wooded north of Tenerife or the sea of clouds spreading there and the neighboring island of La Palma on the horizon can be seen. From the El Portillo visitor center, the mountain can be climbed on the Sendero hiking trails No. 1, No. 29 and No. 36. Parts of the summit plateau are closed for nature conservation reasons. At the southern foot of Fortaleza you can find numerous specimens of wild pret's adder's head ( Echium wildpretii ). The plant, which is endemic to Tenerife and La Palma and reaches a height of up to three meters, shows its red, cone-shaped inflorescence from June to August.
