Loricula pselaphiformis is a species of bug fromthe lichen bug family (Microphysidae).

features

The bugs are 2.0 to 2.5 millimeters (males) or 1.5 to 1.8 millimeters (females) long. In the species of the genus Loricula , the females have a much wider body than the males and are brachypter, so have regressed hemielytres . In addition, the second antenna element is longer than the fourth. In Loricula pselaphiformis , the head is red at the back, otherwise dark brown. The hemielytres are dark brown over a large area and have no white spots. The macropter males are rare, but have a broader body than that of Loricula elegantula . Your pronotum is 2.5 times as wide at the back as at the front.

Occurrence and habitat

The species occurs almost all over Europe, only in the Mediterranean area it is only common in the north. To the east, the distribution area extends over the Middle East to the Caucasus. Like Loricula bipunctata , the species was introduced into North America by humans. The species is widespread in Germany and Austria, but is not common. You can find them in the Alps up to about 1300 meters above sea level.

Above all, more humid, shady habitats are populated.

Way of life

The bugs occur occasionally together with Loricula elegantula , which have a similar way of life. They are mainly found on deciduous trees such as willows ( Salix ), poplars ( Populus ) and ash trees ( Fraxinus ) on lichen-covered trunks and branches. The bugs are rarely found on many other deciduous and coniferous wood species, such as spruce ( Picea ) and fir ( Abies ). In the latter, especially in higher altitudes. In addition, the bugs can also be found on felled trunks or stones overgrown with lichen. Females have also been found in the feeding tunnels of bark beetles , although it is unclear whether they happened to be there or whether they suckled on the eggs or larvae. The nymphs occur depending on the altitude from late April to July at the adult animals from late May to late August. As with the other species of the genus Loricula , the males only live briefly, which is why between the end of July and August one can only find females.
