The Lortzingstraße place was from 1906 to 1908 by the Royal Horticultural architect Fritz Encke in Cologne district Lindenthal created. According to Encke's plans, the 2300 square meter garden square was to take over the function of a multifunctional recreation room in the residential area on Theresienstraße that was built up to the beginning of the 20th century . The square was named after the composer Albert Lortzing , who married Rosina Regina Ahles in Cologne on January 30, 1824.

history

The square was devastated during World War II . In the period that followed, the green space became increasingly overgrown. In January 2001, attention was drawn to Lortzingplatz by the Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection, when it was named Monument of the Month as an example of Encke's social green space planning .

In 2002 the Lortzingplatz was replanted again with the support of the monument preservation department of the City of Cologne for 120,000 euros and based on the original design by Encke, it was divided into three zones. A playground was redesigned on the north side of the square , while a table tennis court was set up on the south side, slightly raised. The central square, which was used as a football field after the war, was converted back into a lawn. Ornamental shrubs and privet hedges were planted along the edges , flower beds were created and benches were set up.

Since July 1, 1980, the square has been a listed building for the city of Cologne.
