The Los Reyes Islands are a group of islands in the north of Papua New Guinea . Politically, they are part of the Manus Province .
geography
The Los Reyes Islands are located 55 km east of Manus and 30 km northwest of Nauna . Putuli Island is separated from Mbatmanda Island by a 2.5 km wide passage. The islands are flat, densely forested and up to 49 m high. The small island of Towi 8 km southwest of Putuli is of volcanic origin and reaches a height of 46 meters. The Los Reyes Islands are uninhabited.
history
The islands have probably been around since around 1500 BC. Inhabited by Melanesians . The area came under German administration in 1885 and belonged to German New Guinea since 1899 . In 1914 the islands were conquered by Australian troops, and after the First World War they were administered as a mandate of the League of Nations of Australia. The islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1944 , but returned to Australian administration in 1949. Since 1975 they have been part of the independent state of Papua New Guinea.
