Lotay Tshering ( Dzongkha : བློ་གྲོས་ བློ་གྲོས་ ཚེ་ ; born 1969 in Mewang Gewog ) is a Bhutanese politician and doctor who has been Prime Minister of Bhutan since November 7, 2018 . Since May 14, 2018 he has also been president of the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa party .

biography

Tshering was born in 1969 in Mewang Gewog as a child of common people. After school in Bhutan, he studied in Bangladesh at the University of Dhaka and Mymensingh Medical College and received a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). After graduating, he studied surgery at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka . In 2007 he studied urology at the Medical College in Wisconsin ( USA ) on a scholarship from the World Health Organization . After returning to Bhutan, he was the only practicing urologist in his country. He worked at the National Referral Hospital in the capital Thimphu, the largest hospital in the country. In 2013 he decided to go into politics and gave up his job at the National Referral Hospital.

In 2013 he ran with the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) in the parliamentary elections . The party became the third strongest force and missed the runoff elections. After losing the election, he completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Canberra in Australia in 2014 . On May 14, 2018, he was elected President of the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa party. His party won the most seats in parliamentary elections five months later . This made Tshering Prime Minister and the DNT became a ruling party for the first time.

On November 7, 2018, he was sworn in as the third democratically elected Prime Minister of Bhutan, replacing his predecessor Tshering Tobgay . On December 27, 2018, he visited neighboring India as Prime Minister on his first trip abroad .

Personal

Tshering is married to a doctor. The couple has adopted a daughter and two other children.

In addition to his political activities, he continues to perform operations on weekends.
