In his photographs and sculptures, Lothar Hempel works with collected images that show dancers, performers and portraits of marginalized groups. Photographs of Pina Bausch's performances appear frequently, as well as of prostitutes and cult figures from film and the stage of the 1990s. By selecting their gestural expression and character, Hempel also offers a detachment from their social, personal, historical etc. contexts, frees them, so to speak, from their history and gives them new opportunities for development. These newly created characters, although they seem a bit strange, are recognizable and thus arouse certain associations in the viewer.

The artist's works relate to other media systems; theater, dance and film play an important role. The artist's photographic collages and sculptures relate to dream situations; Hempel assembles his world of figures, shapes and colors in a certain attitude and opens his work to a stage-like presentation. The narrative associations and contradictions of the works aim at a state between consciousness and dream. That is why Lothar Hempel sees his sculptural constellations as narrative machines into which the viewer is drawn in order to fill them with his own imagination. Hempel's exhibitions present us with an open scenario that offers the viewer various possibilities of meaning and interpretation.
