Le MAGASIN - Center National d'Arts et de Cultures (CNAC; German: Das Lagerhaus - National Center for (modern and contemporary ) art and cultures ) is an art museum in Grenoble that opened in 1986 . It is located in a former industrial building on the Bouchayer-Viallet site - 8 esplanade Andry-Farcy . The museum holds a series of exhibitions each year, either showing the work of a particular artist or the retrospective of a movement.

building

The museum building was designed by the Gustave Eiffels company and built for the fifth Paris World Exhibition in 1900 . There the structure was dismantled and rebuilt in Grenoble for the Bouchayer-Viallet boilersmith . In the end, the 3000 square meter factory hall served as a warehouse, which is what the name of the museum refers to.

history

The conversion of the building was realized by the architect Patrick Bouchain. The CNAC project was one of the regional Grands projets culturels of the French President François Mitterrand and was opened on April 26, 1986 by the French Minister of Culture François Léotard .

Jacques Guillot was the founding director. He was followed as directors by Franz Wilhelm Kaiser (1986–1989), Adelina von Fürstenberg (1989–1994), Yves Aupetitallot (1994–2015) and, since March 2016, Béatrice Josse . One of the well-known curators was Lionel Bovier , director of the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain (MAMCO) in Geneva since 2016 .

Kaiser was involved in the establishment of the École du MAGASIN , a school for the training of curators.
