Lang / Baumann is a Swiss artist couple. Sabina Lang (born March 14, 1972 in Bern , Switzerland) and Daniel Baumann (born February 9, 1967 in San Francisco , USA ) have been working together since 1991. Her work includes installations , sculptures , large-scale wall or floor paintings, inflatable structures and architectural interventions. Most of her work is site specific .

Life

Sabina Lang

Sabina Lang was born on March 14, 1972 in Bern and grew up in Victoria (British Columbia) , Canada , Bremgarten near Bern and Bern . 1988–1989 she attended a preliminary course at the School of Design in Bern. 1989–1990 she completed an apprenticeship as a decoration designer. In 1991 she exhibited for the first time in the riding hall in Bern .

Daniel Baumann

Daniel Baumann was born on February 9, 1967 to Swiss parents in San Francisco , USA and grew up in Bolligen , Canton Bern . 1984–1988 he completed an apprenticeship as a structural draftsman and from 1988–1991 he obtained the federal Matura on the second educational path. He exhibited in the riding arena in Bern in 1988.

From the end of the 1980s, Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann moved in the alternative art scene, especially in the area around the Reithalle Bern, where they also got to know each other and where their first joint performances and exhibition participations took place. In 1991, on the occasion of a cultural exchange between the cities of Bern and Leipzig , they exhibited together for the first time in the premises of the Eigen + Art gallery in Leipzig and then decided to work together from now on. In 1991 they moved into their first joint studio in Thun , and in 1993 the studio in the Burgdorf factory .

Her early work consisted of large-format collages, painting, photography, screen printing as well as performances with various analog projection and sound devices, in some cases they appeared as actors themselves. Spatial works, works with writing and poster campaigns in public spaces were added later. In 1995 the first inflatable installation (Breathing Pillows) was created in De Fabriek Eindhoven , Netherlands . In 1996 followed a three-month stay at the Studio of Young Artists' Association , Budapest . 1996–1997 they spent a year as a fellow at the Swiss Institute in Rome . In addition to participating in various exhibitions in Switzerland and neighboring countries, their installations with dolls, especially on the occasion of the two group exhibitions "Nonchalance" (Center Pasqu'art in Biel , 1997, curated by Christoph Doswald ) and "Free View of the Mediterranean" ( Kunsthaus Zürich , 1998, curated by Bice Curiger and Juri Steiner ) Well known in the Swiss art scene. At the end of the 1990s, her artistic language developed in the direction of opulent colors in room installations, wallpapers, carpets or modular objects. Increasingly, they expanded their work with a functionality (e.g. "Infomobile" 1999, Kunsthalle Bern ).

Around the year 2000 they attracted attention with line drawings on football fields (“Wankdorf” and “Dynamo Kiev” 2001). In 2002, on the occasion of the Swiss national exhibition Expo.02, and at the invitation of the artistic direction, her project Hotel Everland was created (curated by Gianni Jetzer ). Hotel Everland was exhibited from 2006 to 2007 on the roof of the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Leipzig (curated by Barbara Steiner) and from 2007 to 2009 on the roof of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (curated by Marc-Olivier Wahler).

Since the beginning of the 2000s, sculptural works (stair series “Beautiful Steps” or “Diving Platform”), abstract variations of the inflatable works (“Comfort” series), interventions in public spaces and on facades as well as close references to architecture have been created.
