Christoph Doswald

Christoph Doswald (* 1961 in Baden AG ) is a Swiss publicist , curator and university lecturer. Since October 1st, 2009 he has been chairman of the working group Art in Public Spaces (AG KiöR) of the City of Zurich .

Live and act

Doswald spent childhood and youth in Wettingen and Baden. From 1981 to 1989 he studied history, art history and political science at the University of Zurich , interrupted by longer stays in Spain and Latin America .

In the mid-1980s he began his journalistic activities on topics and exhibitions of contemporary art, including for Kunstforum International , Parkett , neue bildende kunst, Artis, Eikon , SonntagsZeitung , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Weltwoche and Tages-Anzeiger . Under the pseudonym Dr. From 1991 to 2000, Kuno wrote a weekly lifestyle column for Doswald, first for the SonntagsZeitung, then for the Schweizer Illustrierte .

In 1998, together with Monica Glisenti, he designed the cross-culture magazine "cashual" for the Ringier publishing house. The monthly magazine combined artistic and journalistic strategies. B. Nan Goldin as a reportage photographer or Pipilotti Rist as a model, but was hired again after six issues. Between 2002 and 2008 Doswald was department head for social issues at the Swiss Sunday newspaper.

Together with Paolo Bianchi, Doswald ran a room for ephemeral art projects in their flat share in Baden in 1985/86 - an off space “avant la lettre”: In this informal setting, they showed artist friends and organized performances. From 1988 to 1992 Doswald was a board member of the Shedhalle Zurich , interim president, where curator Harm Lux organized an ambitious exhibition program, including projects by Jordi Colomer, Francesca Woodman , Christian Marclay , Sylvie Fleury , Christopher Williams , Pipilotti Rist , Thomas Hirschhorn and Daniele Buetti .

At the same time, Doswald has curated exhibitions since the mid-1980s, including at the Kunsthaus Graz , the Villa Arson in Nice , the Kunstmuseum Bern , the Center Pasquart Biel and the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. From 2001 to 2007 he was a member of the «Comité technique», the buying committee of the Fonds Régional d'Art Contemporain (FRAC PACA) in Marseille, where he realized various exhibitions, among others with Ugo Rondinone and Maria Marshall.

Since October 1st, 2009 Doswald has been chairman of the working group Art in Public Space (AG KiöR) of the City of Zurich. He is responsible for the program for art in urban space and curated ART AND THE CITY (2012) and Art Altstetten Albisrieden (2015). The KiöR project zurich - transit - maritim , popularly known as the "Hafenkran", a temporary art intervention on the Limmatquai that sparked heated debates in the Zurich municipal council, in the population and in the media, received great attention . He also expresses himself on the subject of art in public space in lectures such as "Battle Zone Public Space" .

Doswald held various teaching positions and visiting professorships, including at the Zurich University of the Arts and at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , where he represented Christian Jankowski, who was curating Manifesta 11 in Zurich during this time . Doswald has been on the board of visarte.schweiz, the national professional association of visual artists in Switzerland, since 2012. There he is responsible for art and construction and art in public space and in this role he brought the Prix Visarte into being. He has been President of the Kulturweg Limmat Foundation since 2016 . In 2019 he curated the Weiertal Sculpture Biennale under the title "Paradise, lost" based on John Milton.

His partner is the German curator and art historian Dorothea Strauss . Doswald lives in and near Zurich.
