Lothar Schnabel (born September 5, 1940 ) is a former German football player. For BSG Wismut Gera , he played in 1967 in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

As a 19-year-old Lothar Schnabel started playing football for men. In the 1959 season he played for the company sports community (BSG) Wismut Gera a game in the second-rate 1st GDR league , even in 1960 he did not get beyond two GDR league missions. Instead, he joined the 2nd team in the district league, which was fourth class at the time. In March 1961, after five seasons, GDR football was switched back to the summer-spring game rhythm. To align, 39 games had to be played in the 1st GDR league. Schnabel was able to play his way into the regular squad, and by the end of the season he was called up 28 times. In the two following seasons he was able to maintain his regular place. In 1962/63 he played all 26 games in the 1st GDR league, and in 1963/64 29 of 30 games in the GDR league.

After Schnabel had been used in all ten league games at the beginning of the 1964/65 season, he was drafted for military service in the National People's Army for 18 months . There he was able to play another ten GDR league games in the second half of the 1965/66 season with the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Meiningen , in which he was usually called up as a left defender.

After his discharge from military service, Schnabel returned to the BSG Wismut Gera, which had previously been promoted to the GDR Oberliga. There he came on the 16th matchday in the match between FSV Zwickau and Wismut Gera for his first league appearance. In the 1: 3 defeat he was used as a defender. As such, he also played the following nine league games. At the end of the season, Wismut Gera was determined to be relegated. Lothar Schnabel then no longer appeared in higher-class football.
