Lotte Michailova

Lotte Michailova (born November 27, 1925 as Lotte Herz in Pernik / Bulgaria, † November 12, 2014 in Cölbe ) was a Bulgarian photographer.

Life

Lotte Herz was born on November 27, 1925 in Pernik / Bulgaria. Her mother was the Bulgarian Mara Zanewa, her father the German Anton Herz, who worked as a mining engineer in Bulgaria. Lotte Herz attended the German St. Maria School in Sofia, which she graduated from high school in 1946. In 1952 she married Anastas Michailow Atanassow, professor of theater arts in Sofia. The son Mihail Atanasov was born in 1953.

From 1946 to 1952 Lotte Michailova was employed as a photographer in the photography department of the Sofia municipality. She professionalized her photographic skills through courses in film and photo technology as well as scientific photography at the Bulgarian film studio. 1952–1970 she photographed the making of 20 feature films as a still and advertising photographer for Bulgarian film. 1970–1983 she worked as a photo editor for the field of “artistic photography” in the “Interfoto” department at the Sofia Press Agency (ASF).

In addition to her dependent employment as a photographer, Lotte Michailova took part in numerous exhibitions and competitions with her non-commissioned photographs. She received 44 prizes for her photographs at national and international photo competitions.

In 1999, after the death of her husband, Lotte Michailova moved to Marburg, where her son was a visiting professor at Philipps University. She lived in the Richtsberg district, got involved in the community, documented her living environment with a camera and gave photography courses for beginners.

  • Most of the photographic legacy from the Bulgarian years is in the Museum of Photography, Braunschweig . Another part is owned by her son Mihail Atanasov, who also keeps the photographs from the early days and from the Marburg years.

  • 1963 Gold Medal - Second National Exhibition of Art Photography
  • 1964 Grand Prix for film photography and 1st prize for still and advertising photography at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
  • 1973 Gold medal of the Bavarian State Parliament for the best landscape and gold medal for the best overall performance in black and white as a single exhibitor at the International Herrsching Photo Week
  • 2000 Certificate of Honor for her exceptional contribution to the development of photography in Bulgaria from the Photographic Academy / Sofia
  • 2005 Award for her life's work by the Photography Academy / Sofia
  • 2011 Historic city seal of the city of Marburg for their social commitment and their artistic work.

Lotte Michailova was a member of the Photography Academy in Sofia and the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique .
