life and work

Louis Baudin was born in Brussels in 1887 to French parents. He studied law and obtained his doctorate in Paris . During the First World War he was seriously injured, which resulted in several years of hospitalization. In 1922 he became a professor at the Law Faculty in Dijon . In 1937 he moved to the Sorbonne . He was also a professor at the École des Hautes Études Commerciales , a member of the Institut de France , President of the Association française de science politique and Vice-President of the Association Internationale de Science Économique . His research focus was economic and financial history, including the theories of the planned economy and elite research.

A stay in Ecuador and reports by Spanish chroniclers of the 16th and 17th centuries led to his research on the Inca state . He was the first to describe how the economy of the Inca Empire functioned according to fixed planned economy rules and which control systems were developed to comply with the rules, but did not see this economic structure as determined by the spatial conditions of the Andes .

His writings, for which he also evaluated the chronicle of Waman Puma de Ayala , which was only found in 1908, and other old image sources, also dealt with the extremely hierarchical or dualistic social structure, architecture, road construction, the military and the science and art of the Inca . They were included in famous book series such as ( La vie quotidienne , rde , Manesse Library of World History ) .

As a representative of liberal economic ideas and a member of the Mont Pèlerin Society , Baudin was personally an opponent of the planned economy and socialism.
