Louis Siquet (born August 9, 1946 in Büllingen ) is a Belgian politician of the Socialist Party (SP). He has been a member of the Council or Parliament of the German-speaking Community since 1997 , of which he was President from 2004 to 2010, and was the Senator of the German-speaking Community until 2014 .

Life

After finishing secondary school, Louis Siquet received administrative training in social legislation. He then worked as a social worker and head of office.

His political career began in 1997 as a member of the Council (now Parliament) of the German-speaking Community, when he succeeded Karl-Heinz Lambertz (SP), who was then a minister in the community government . After the parliamentary elections in 1999, Siquet retained his place in the DG Parliament and at the same time became the first representative of the German-speaking community in the (federal) Senate.

He held this mandate until the 2004 community elections. Afterwards he was elected President of the DG Parliament, while Berni Collas ( PFF ) became the Community Senator . After the sudden death of Collas, however, the positions within the governing coalition were re-filled, so that Louis Siquet was re-elected as Senator of the German-speaking Community on February 1, 2010, while the office of Parliament President went to Ferdel Schröder (PFF).

Louis Siquet's parliamentary work focused in particular on the problem of cross-border commuters between Belgium and Germany and Luxembourg . Siquet sparked media interest in 2008 when he and a French-speaking and a Dutch-speaking music producer recorded a song entitled “My Little Belgium” to evoke the unity of the country. He presented a CD to the then Belgian King Albert II at a reception in Brussels.

After the community elections on May 25, 2014 , Siquet was replaced by Alexander Miesen (PFF) as community senator. Since then he has met again as a simple MP.

Louis Siquet is a bearer of the Leopold Order and various civil awards.
