Berni Collas

Bernard "Berni" Collas (born April 27, 1954 in Weismes , † September 16, 2010 in Brussels ) was a Belgian politician of the Party for Freedom and Progress (PFF) or Mouvement Réformateur (MR). He was since 1990 member of the Parliament of the German-speaking Community of Belgium and 2004-2010 Community Senator .

Life

Berni Collas, studied translation (IESLC, 1976) and political scientist ( VUB , 1984), worked for a Belgian financial institution from 1978 to 1999, mainly in the international field. At the same time he was from 1985 to 1990 president of the PFF local section in Büllingen .

In 1990 he made the leap to the Council (later: Parliament) of the German-speaking Community of Belgium for the PFF, where he was the chairman of his group until 1999. From September 1999 to September 2003 Collas worked as a technical advisor in the cabinet of Federal Foreign Minister Louis Michel (MR), and from 2003 to January 2004 in the cabinet of Finance Minister Didier Reynders (MR).

In 2004, Collas was appointed a so-called Community Senator by the Parliament of the German-speaking Community . In the Senate, he deposited the legislative proposals that provide that the federal legal texts, which are only published in Dutch and French, are now to be translated into German with and with (also called "Collas Laws"; see also language legislation in Belgium ). He was also a Vice President of the Senate investigative committee that dealt with the incidents surrounding the “ Fortis Affair” in 2008–2009. In January 2010, however, Collas had to surrender his Senate mandate after the majority in Parliament, in execution of the coalition agreement of the government of the German-speaking Community under Karl-Heinz Lambertz ( SP ), elected the former Senator and Parliament President Louis Siquet (SP) as Community Senator .

Berni Collas died unexpectedly on September 16, 2010, leaving behind his wife and three children.
