Louise Merkel-Romée

Louise Merkel-Romée (born January 30, 1888 in Krakow in Austria-Hungary , † August 15, 1977 in Vienna ) was an Austrian artist . She was a member of the Zinkenbach painters' colony .

Life

Like her husband Georg Merkel , Louise came from Galicia . Between 1903 and 1905 she received private drawing and painting lessons from her future husband Georg, whom she married in 1908. In the same year he traveled to Vienna. The couple lived in Paris between 1908 and 1914 . In 1914 she moved to Vienna, where she was able to continue her training in painting. She quickly found access to the artist society , so she was one of the first female members of the Vienna Hagenbund , to which she belonged as a "corresponding member" from 1919. She was also on record as an associate member from 1925 to 1938, which gave her the opportunity to hold regular exhibitions. In 1931 she took part in the exhibition "Viennese Women's Art" with some works. In 1936 a collective exhibition of her works took place in Vienna.

In 1938 she followed her husband to emigrate to France. She continued her exhibition activities in the 50s and 60s. Her artistic focus was landscape and portrait painting, she also made many still lifes . After a serious illness, she returned to Vienna in 1971. She is buried there with her husband in the Vienna Central Cemetery. Her works are still offered in art dealers at reasonable prices.
