Louise Johnson Rosenbaum (born January 21, 1908 in Carrollton (Texas) , † January 16, 1980 in Middletown (Connecticut) ) was an American mathematician and university professor. She and Marjorie Beaty were among the first two women to receive a PhD in mathematics from the University of Colorado before 1960.

Life and research

After graduating from high school, Rosenbaum studied at the University of Colorado at the age of 16 and at the same time taught at high schools in eastern Colorado for two years. In 1928 she received her bachelor's degree. In 1930 she became a high school teacher in Armel, Colorado, returned to the University of Colorado as an assistant, and began her studies as an assistant in mathematics. She received her master's degree in 1933 after completing a job with Aubrey J. Kempner , who also supervised her doctorate. Her dissertation in number theory was reviewed by Paul Erdős , who became a good friend and was interested in her mathematical results. She then worked at Reed College , Portland, Oregon , on a General Education Board grant to work with Professor FL Griffin to create an integrated math curriculum. The other fellows in the program were Harry Goheen, Robert Rosenbaum, and Henry Scheffe . In 1942 she married the mathematician Robert Rosenbaum, with whom she had three sons. While her husband served as a naval aviator in the Pacific, she continued to teach at Reed College. In 1953 she followed her husband to Connecticut , where he was appointed to Wesleyan University . She was a professor at the University of Saint Joseph (Connecticut) , was a visiting scholar at Smith College from 1973 to 1974 , was a committee member of the School Mathematics Study Group, ran summer schools for teachers in Connecticut and Oregon, and worked with her husband on a bibliography of math for high school libraries and wrote an introduction to math book.
