The Louisen Mausoleum is a listed mausoleum in the palace gardens of Schloss Ludwigslust . Erected for Duchess Luise , who died in 1808 , it subsequently served as a burial place for other members of the grand ducal house of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

construction

Luise was the wife of Duke Friedrich Franz I. After her death on January 1st, 1808, Friedrich Franz I had her built a neoclassical mausoleum in 1809/1810. Compared to the Helenen-Paulownen-Mausoleum, it is simpler as a sparsely structured cube with lunette windows and has the basic shape of a rectangle. Five steps, on which two sandstone lions rest, lead to the front door. In the pediment there are two Egyptian sphinxes in high relief . The entrance is closed by an iron lattice door. In the architrave there is the dedication LOUISEN in gilded letters . A gilded Latin cross rises on the gable.

Johann Georg Barca's first commission from sovereign Friedrich Franz I was in 1808 to design the mausoleum for his late wife Louise in the palace gardens. Appointed court architect in 1808, he became master builder for the district of the ducal residence Ludwigslust in 1810.

In 1861 the building was redesigned and received the lions and the gable cross. Another renovation took place towards the end of the 19th century. Extensive restorations have been taking place since 2000.
