Paul Friedrich, Duke of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin]

Paul Friedrich, Duke of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] (born September 19, 1852 in Ludwigslust ; † May 17, 1923 there ; full name: Paul Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich ) was a Mecklenburg-Schwerin cavalry general .

Life

Paul Friedrich was the second child of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II and his first wife, Princess Auguste Reuss zu Köstritz . From 1870 to 1876 he served, first as a lieutenant and then as a cavalry captain , in the Brandenburg Hussar Regiment (Zietensche Hussars) No. 3 in Rathenow . With the regiment he took part in the war against France in 1870/71 and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

Since April 9, 1902, he held the rank of Grand Ducal Mecklenburg General of the Cavalry and stood à la suite of the 1st Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 17 .

Since 1873 he was a corps bow bearer of the Corps Borussia Bonn .

Marriage and offspring

On May 5, 1881, Paul Friedrich married his cousin, the Austrian Princess Marie von Windisch-Graetz , the third daughter of Prince (from 1867: Prince) Hugo von Windisch-Graetz and his wife Luise, Duchess of Mecklenburg (-Schwerin) . The couple had five children:

Although the Mecklenburg House was Protestant, the couple raised their children in the Catholic faith. In 1884 the duke converted to the Catholic faith. The financial problems of the ducal couple led to Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV (Mecklenburg) having the ducal couple incapacitated on March 5, 1906 and placed under the trustee of Oberlandstallmeister Christian von Stenglin (1843–1928) .
