history

Lourdes grotto Tannheim (2012)

The Mariengrotte was originally set up in the former ossuary under Pastor Jacob Braun . Due to an expansion of the cemetery in 1938, the Lourdes grotto was moved to its current location. A farmer made the nearby mountainside available for this purpose. Today's Lourdes grotto was built by a master mason and a citizen of Tannheim using old tombstones.

At the time of the Second World War , from autumn 1944, every evening petitions to the grotto took place in order to pray for an early end to the war and to spare the hometown. When, towards the end of the war, Tannheim was increasingly endangered by air raids due to its proximity to Memmingen , its train station and Illerwerk II Tannheim , Pastor Hugo Farny (1934–1961) ordered the village to protect Mary and vowed to take part in an annual procession if it was spared To hold Lourdes grotto.

Since Tannheim was largely spared from the war, the Scapular Festival has been held in July as a Tannheim Festival to fulfill the vow.
