Love of My Life (Fred Astaire song)

Love of My Life is a swing song written by Artie Shaw (music) and Johnny Mercer (lyrics) and released in 1938. He was best known through Fred Astaire .

Shaw and Mercer wrote (Would You Like to Be the) Love of My Life for the film Swing-Romance (1940) directed by HC Potter , starring Fred Astaire and Paulette Goddard . Love of My Life , featured in the film by Astaire, received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1941 .

When Swing-Romance was filmed in August 1940, the Artie Shaw Orchestra a. a. Bobby Hackett (who dubbed Fred Astaire's trumpet playing in the film), Billy Butterfield (trumpet), Vernon Brown (trombone), Jerry Jerome (tenor saxophone), Johnny Guarnieri (piano) and Nick Fatool (drums). Cover versions of Love of My Life took from 1940 Claude Thornhill ( Okeh Records 5901), Tony Pastor , Woody Herman (Decca 3544), Will Bradley (Columbia 35871), Artie Shaw (with band vocalist Anita Boyer and arranger Ray Conniff ; Victor 26790) and Fred Astaire himself (Columbia 35815). Artie Shaw himself recorded the song several times, including a. with vocalist Mel Tormé . In later years u. a. Barney Kessel and Page Cavanaugh .

The Shaw / Mercer song should not be confused with the compositions of the same name by Cole Porter , which he wrote for the musical The Pirate (1948), and by Roger Kellaway .
