Love of My Life is a rock ballad by the British rock band Queen . The song was written by Freddie Mercury for his then girlfriend Mary Austin and was first released on the 1975 album A Night at the Opera . In the studio version, the song is accompanied by a harp and a piano . Since the song was performed in almost all of Queen's live appearances, it is also included on various live albums, including Live Killers and Live at Wembley '86 . In 1979 the song reached number 63 in a live version as a single from the album Live Killers in the British charts .
The song quickly became a fan favorite. Therefore, it was played on almost all live performances. Mercury often had the audience sing parts of the song. During the live performances, a guitar was always used instead of the harp .
