Luc Frieden (born September 16, 1963 in Esch-sur-Alzette ) is a Luxembourg politician, lawyer and bank manager.

Life

After graduating from high school at the capital's Athenaeum in 1982, Frieden studied commercial law at the Cours Universitaire de Luxembourg and at the Sorbonne in Paris . In 1987 he received a “ Master of Comparative Law and Legal Philosophy ” from Cambridge University and in 1988 a “ Master of Laws ” from Harvard Law School . At the same time he took peace courses at the John F. Kennedy School of Government .

From 1989 to 1998, Frieden worked as a lawyer in Luxembourg City , teaching Luxembourg law at the Cours Universitaire de Luxembourg and publishing articles on banking and constitutional law. Between 1981 and 1994 he worked as a freelancer for the Luxembourg RTL , where he dealt with legal and foreign policy issues.

In 1994, Frieden was elected to the Luxembourg Parliament for the first time as a candidate for the CSV . On February 4, 1998, Frieden became Minister for Justice, Budget and Relations with Parliament and was responsible for introducing the euro in Luxembourg. On August 7, 1999, he was confirmed in his offices in a CSV / DP coalition. From 27 July 2009 to the end of 2013 he was in the CSV / LSAP - Coalition Minister of Finance.

In July 2014 he resigned from parliament and switched to the private sector. From September 2014 to the beginning of 2016, Frieden worked as Vice Chairman for Deutsche Bank AG in London. In this role, he advised the Executive Board and senior management on strategic aspects of international and European affairs. At that time he was also President of Deutsche Bank Luxembourg.

After his time at Deutsche Bank, Luc Frieden became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank BIL (Banque Internationale à Luxembourg) in Luxembourg and, since October 2016, lawyer and partner at the Elvinger Hoss law firm in Luxembourg. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the St. Paul Media Group in Luxembourg and a member of the Board of Directors of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. In 2016 he is also visiting professor at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, where he teaches European business law.
