Luc Mishalle

Luc Mishalle (* 1953 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian jazz musician ( saxophone , composition ) and orchestra director who designs and leads participatory intercultural music projects that bring different social groups together.

Live and act

Mishalle, who consciously decided against an academic training as a musician, has worked as a musician and composer with independent theater groups such as Welfare State International , Emergency Exit Arts , Dogtroep or Internationale Nieuwe Scène since 1973 . In the late 1970s, influenced by Fred Van Hove and the Werkgroep Improviserende Musici , he played avant-garde music based on free jazz and electronics in a trio with Paul Geladi and Luc Steels. Until 1983 he was also part of the Dutch jazz band Fanfare St. Juttemis , with whom he recorded two albums.

Mishalle has been with MET-X since 1984 , a music house that has been based in Brussels since 1982; since 1998 he has been its artistic director. There he mainly deals with the music of cultural minorities and founded world music bands such as Belçikal, Raï Express and Marakbar , which also performed successfully on a European level. Since 1988 he was a member of the Belgian Blindman Kwartet for ten years , with whom he released two albums. In addition, he led the group Galileo's Left Wing , which existed until 2000 and also performed in Germany with its World Jazz . Occasionally he worked with the Ictus Ensemble . He also directed the multicultural big band Al-Harmoniah . Marockin 'Brass , which he initiated, was on tour with Trevor Watts and Adama Dramé in 2015 . In 2017 he played with Paul Vlaeminck , Peter Jacquemyn , Mike Goyvaerts and Ivo Vander Borght in the ensemble of the Werkgroep Improviserende Musici .

In 2017, the European Cultural Foundation awarded Mishalle the ECF Princess Margriet Prize for Culture 2017; he is very active in his local communities, working with people from different cultures to find ways that lead to new forms of social engagement.
