Lucid Motors , formerly Atieva , is an American automotive company that specializes in electric cars . The company was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Newark ( California ).

history

Lucid was founded in 2007 by Bernard Tse and Sam Weng under the name Atieva and originally focused on building electric vehicle batteries and powertrains for other vehicle manufacturers. Some of Lucid's employees previously worked for other automakers, including current CEO Peter Rawlinson , former technical director at Tesla , and Derek Jenkins , former head of design at Mazda in North America. By 2016, various venture capitalists had invested over $ 130 million in the young company.

In 2014 the company began developing its own automobile. The company renamed itself Lucid Motors in October 2016 and officially announced its intention to develop a premium, fully electric vehicle. The first electric vehicle model Lucid Air was presented in December 2016.

On November 29, 2016, Arizona state regulators and Lucid Motors announced the planned construction of a $ 700 million Lucid facility in Casa Grande , which is expected to employ up to 2,000 people by the mid-2020s. The capacity is to be around 20,000 cars per year and will be expanded to up to 130,000.

On September 17, 2018 Lucid Motors announced that it with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia led Dollar US talks on financing worth over 1 billion. The investment was completed in April 2019 and will finance the final construction and testing of the Lucid Air model, the first phase of its production facility in Casa Grande and the commercial production of the Lucid Air including the establishment of a distribution network.

Lucid has designed, developed, manufactured and supplied battery packs for all racing teams in the 2018/19 FIA Formula E Championship and will continue to do so in the 2019/20 season in collaboration with McLaren Applied Technologies and Sony .

In July 2019, the company moved to its new headquarters in Newark.

Lucid Air

The fully electric vehicle model Lucid Air was presented in December 2016 and designed with a 400 HP front engine and a 600 HP rear engine for a combined output of 1000 HP. Lucid has agreed with Mobileye to use their EyeQ4 chips and 8 cameras for driver assistance functions that will make the car ready for self-driving functions. This four-door sedan reaches a software-restricted top speed of 300 km / h, which has already been exceeded during test drives.

The final production version of the Lucid Air will be presented to the public on September 9, 2020. Production should start before the end of the year so that the first deliveries can take place in spring 2021. The range after the EPA test cycle is 517 miles (standard adjustment factor), which corresponds to 832 kilometers.
