Life

Olbrechts-Tyteca - coming from an influential Brussels family - studied literary and social science topics and methods at the University of Brussels without ever aiming for a professional career. She later married the statistician Raymond Olbrechts, who was eleven years her senior, and led an academically and socially withdrawn life until she met the philosopher Chaïm Perelman in 1948.

Between 1948 and 1984, Olbrechts-Tyteca and Perelman developed a comprehensive work on argumentation theory, the main contribution of which was Traité de l'argumentation. La nouvelle rhetorique - together with the work by Stephen Toulmin published in the same year - contributed significantly to the departure from argumentation- theoretic logicism . The influence remained until the 21st century. get into it. Olbrechts-Tyteca's exact contribution to this work and the other joint works is scientifically controversial, but as a rule the extensive practical parts are attributed to her, while Perelman the abstract theoretical parts.

Olbrechts-Tyteca established herself as an independent scholar with her elaboration on rhetoric and comics, Le Comique du Discours from 1974.
