Lucien Cooremans
Lucien Georges François Philippe Cooremans (born September 1, 1899 in Sint-Gillis , † February 22, 1985 in Brussels ) was a Belgian liberal politician.
Life
Cooremans was a lawyer, journalist and lecturer at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). As a politician he was a member of parliament, aldermen and from 1956 to 1975 mayor of Brussels. He was one of the central figures of the world exhibition Expo 58 .
Cooremans was a member of the Freemasons Association .
He initially blocked the petition to make the Grand-Place car-free for months, but then had to give in due to the ongoing "sit-down protest" , whereby the square was finally closed to car traffic in 1971.

- 1959: Large silver medal with the star for services to the Republic of Austria
- 1970: Large gold medal with the star for services to the Republic of Austria
