Lucien Fabre (born February 14, 1889 in Pampelonne , † November 26, 1952 in Paris ) was a French writer, engineer and industrialist. In 1923 he received the Prix Goncourt for the novel Rabevel ou Le mal des ardents (published in three volumes by Gallimard).

Life

Fabre was the son of a clothing merchant and attended the École centrale des arts et manufactures in Paris.

Fabre was interested in art and literature and was acquainted with Paul Valéry , Léon-Paul Fargue and Jacques Thibaud . He was close to the socialists ( he knew Jean Jaurès from his youth). His books also show in many ways his attachment to his native Languedoc .

During the First World War he was an officer in the artillery and was seriously wounded in 1914. For the remainder of the war he was a manager in the arms industry.

In 1921 he published a popular science book on the theory of relativity (Les théories d'Einstein: une nouvelle figure du monde, Paris: Payot, 1921). He also added an alleged preface by Einstein, which angered him. At Einstein's insistence, he had to withdraw the preface. He also published poetry (his first volume of poetry Connaissance de la déesse appeared in 1920 with a foreword by Paul Valéry).

For his book Jeanne d'Arc (1948) he received the great price for history of the Académie francaise.

In 1933 he became an officer of the Legion of Honor and later commander.
