Lucius Antonius Naso

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucius Antonius Naso (full name form Lucius Antonius Marci filius Fabia Naso ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 1st century AD . Individual stations of his career are known through an inscription that was found in Baalbek and which is dated to 77/78 AD.

Life

Naso began his military career as a centurion in Legio III Cyrenaica , which was stationed in the province of Aegyptus . Then he was Centurion in Legio XIII Gemina , which was stationed in the province of Pannonia . He was awarded the albata decursio by an emperor whose name has been lost on the inscription . As a centurion, he was also the administrator of a community in Pannonia ( civitatis Colaphianorum ). He was eventually promoted to Primus Pilus in Legio XIII Gemina, making him the highest-ranking centurion of this legion.

Next he became a tribune in the newly established Legio I Italica ; the rise to knighthood was connected with it. Then Naso took over the leadership of the following units in Rome as a tribune: the Cohors IIII Vigilum , the Cohors XV Urbana , the Cohors XI Urbana and the Cohors IX Praetoria . He held the last post in 68. He also received various awards: the Corona vallaris , the Corona aurea , twice vexillis and twice the Hasta pura .

After the death of Nero (54–68), Naso fell into the turmoil of the four-emperor year . He was once again Primus Pilus, this time in Legio XIV Gemina . He then took over the management of the Cohors I Praetoria in Rome as a tribune . He was also given command of the veterans of the various armies who were staying in Rome ( praeposito supra veteranos Romae morantium plurium exercituum ).

At the end of his career, Naso was procurator Augusti in the province of Pontus et Bithynia around 77/78 . Two other inscriptions on milestones , dated 78, prove that he had road construction work carried out in the province.

Origin and family

Naso was inscribed in the tribe of Fabia and came either from Berytus , today's Beirut, or from Colonia Heliopolis , today's Baalbek . He was a relative (possibly the brother) of Titus Antonius Taurus . The two ( Antonius Taurus et Antonius Naso ) are mentioned by Tacitus in the Historiae .

Remarks

  1. According to Ségolène Demougin, after the reforms of Claudius (41–54) , the posts of the legionary tribunes were actually reserved for members of the equestrian order. The appointment of Naso as a tribune, with which the admission to the knighthood was connected, is explained by the fact that experienced officers were needed in the newly established Legio I Italica .
  2. According to Ségolène Demougin, the awards were presented by Nero to Naso .
  3. According to Ségolène Demougin and Hans-Georg Pflaum, Naso was dismissed by Galba and taken back into the army as primus pilus by Otho ; Once again sidelined by Vitellius , he was then rehabilitated by Vespasian and reinstated as a tribune.
