Böttcher studied in Warsaw, Lemberg and Leipzig . In Leipzig he received his doctorate in 1898 under Sophus Lie and Adolph Mayer with the dissertation Contributions to the theory of iterative calculation. Then he was at the Polytechnic University in Lemberg , first as an assistant, then from 1910 as an adjunct . Böttcher wrote about 20 mathematical papers, most of which - like the dissertation - dealt with questions of iteration theory. He also wrote some textbooks. He was retired on August 31, 1935.

He was married and had four children.
